Coastal and marine ecosystems are important ecologically, culturally, and socio-economically. The Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology will maintain and improve ecosystems through better coastal management by identifying critical thresholds to prevent decline in biodiversity and maintain trophic structure.
How local environmental change such as landuse intensification interacts with global processes will be identified. Forecasted impacts of global change on these systems include increased oceanic temperature, turbidity and nutrient loading, and ocean acidification (from CO2 loading).
