The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is committed to strengthening our relationship with secondary schools. We aim to provide barrier-free pathways from secondary school into tertiary studies and future employment for senior students.
The Polytechnic’s curriculum alignment projects have creatively explored many and varied models of partnership and alignments with schools. The result is a selection of partnership opportunities between the secondary and tertiary sectors, branded ‘SmartPaths’. These range from one-day on-campus experiences to year-long partnership programmes. STAR funding may apply for senior students.
SmartPaths programmes are developed in such a way that wherever possible they will pathway into further study at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Find out more about the programmes offered from our 2010 SmartGuide (PDF, 2.5MB).
There is a range of different SmartPath programmes available. Find out more about the definitions and characteristics of the various SmartPaths Programmes (PDF) to assist you when choosing options.
The one-day and 30-hour courses are held on-campus at Bongard or Windermere; the 30-hour programmes are delivered as either a block course, or run one day per week over five or six weeks. Check SmartGuide 2010 for dates. Schools can nominate any number of students and we will make up classes as required.
The 100-hour partnership programmes are completed over the duration of the school year (February to November), and taught in secondary schools using the Polytechnic’s resources and accreditation; results are moderated and formally ratified through Polytechnic policy.
All off-site SmartPartnership (SP) programmes need to be registered with the Polytechnic prior to the start of the year of study:
The fees quoted for all programmes are exclusive of GST and cover all course costs except booklets, which will be printed at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and delivered to your school for cost.
Secondary schools will be responsible for registering unit standards achieved from SmartPaths programmes with NZQA, and for payment of the appropriate registration fees. Schools must have all unit standard results ratified by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic prior to submitting them to NZQA. Schools need to advise NZQA that Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is the ‘provider’.
All SmartPaths students are required to enrol with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic to enable their results to be moderated and recorded in accordance with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic policy.
Please refer to the 2010 SmartGuide (PDF, 2.5MB) when filling out these forms.
Where formal assessment applies, results will be collated by both the Secondary School and Polytechnic staff.
Once the Secondary School has registered the units with NZQA, these records are available for students to view online at NZQA.
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic can issue students with an Academic Results Notice, and will keep a permanent record of each student’s results.
In line with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic academic policy all students will be entitled to one resit per assessment, if necessary, without incurring additional fees. Timing of resits will be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
