Health Insurance
All international students wishing to visit or stay in New Zealand for more than 12 months are required to complete a medical certificate as part of their application for a student permit. This includes new students, existing students, students on short courses and group students.
International students who are required to complete a medical certificate should take the revised Medical and Chest X-Ray certificate form with them to their doctor. Immigration New Zealand provides a list of appointed panel doctors that have been approved to conduct the required medical examination.
It is compulsory for you to have medical insurance for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. We also strongly recommend that you obtain insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand. Students must comply with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic's Medical and Travel Policy, as specified in the Code of Practice.
We can arrange insurance for you, as detailed on your acceptance letter. More information is available from the International Team.
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit you may be liable for the full costs incurred. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available on the website for the Ministry of Health.
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be found on the ACC website.
Healthcare
Our Health Centres are situated at both Windermere Campus (in L4) and the Bongard Centre (on Level 1). A nurse is available for ongoing care and advice on issues such as the treatment of injuries, diet and weight programmes, health screening, health education and the monitoring of certain conditions such as raised blood pressure.
A doctor is available at advertised lunchtimes during the week.
Flu
Visit the Ministry of Health website for information regarding the influenza pandemic. More Bay of Plenty Polytechnic information is pending, but in the meantime please contact the Health and Safety Adviser on 07 571 0190 ext. 6920.
Travel Insurance
Your travel insurance policy should cover the following:
- Loss of baggage and other personal effects
- Accident and injury
- Disruption to travel plans
- Cost of medical care in any “stopover” countries
Suggested minimum content for appropriate insurance policies should:
- Commence the minute the student leaves home for the airport on their way to New Zealand
- Apply while in transit
- Cover the student for any trips
Details of your insurance policy must be held on your student file with the International Team.
