2012 powhiri, held Monday, 20 February at Windermere Campus.

The first official day of the tertiary year kicked off with a buzz of excitement at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Around 2,000 expectant students marched through the gateway onto Pomare at the Windermere Campus earlier this morning symbolising the start of the Powhiri, the official welcome of students onto the Polytechnic’s campus. This ceremony formally recognises and acknowledges students as part of the Polytechnic family.

The first day of tertiary study can be daunting for new students. Amidst the throngs of nervous and excited students was Certificate in Fitness student Jeana Connelly. “It’s a bit nerve racking but I’m really excited to get into it,” said Jeana. “We watched a video first thing this morning and it really inspired me, I can’t wait!”

A powhiri was also held at the Bongard Centre later in the day, welcoming business students to the Polytechnic.
