Online Study FAQs
Online and blended programmes are delivered using our BayLearn learning network. About two weeks before the start of your programme you'll get access to a special area called the "Introduction to the Programme" course, which will help you familiarise yourself with BayLearn. You'll find out:
- how to use the BayLearn system
- how to access e-learning support and
- how to make the most of your time online
You'll be asked to complete a couple of tasks so that you know what to expect when you start the first course of your programme. Have a look at our online learning FAQs below and see if online learning is for you.
What does BayLearn look like?
- The National Certificate in Aquaculture Level 4 is delivered completely online. Have a look at a demonstration of one of the aquaculture courses on BayLearn.
- The New Zealand Law Society - Legal Executive Course is supported by online learning. Tutors post readings, materials, course notes and more on BayLearn. Take a look at the "Introduction to Law Office Practice" demonstration on Baylearn.
Online Learning FAQs
Is online learning for you?
Online learning doesn't suit everyone. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to if this style of study will fit in with your circumstances, lifestyle and educational needs.
Do you have (or are you willing to obtain) access to a computer and phone line at home?
This is important because of the discussions and activities that will take place online. This is also the first point of contact with your tutor and classmates.
Are you a self-motivated and self-disciplined person?
Courses that are offered online can be studied at your own time and pace. While a suggested timeline is provided so that all course work and assessments can be completed in the allocated time for your course, you'll still need the motivation and discipline to complete them.
Do you feel that high quality learning can take place without having face-to-face interaction?
As face-to-face interaction with tutors is limited, this is an important consideration. Tutors are available via email, phone and through BayLearn, the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s e-learning network. You can also chat with fellow students and take part in discussion forums that relate to your studies.
Are you comfortable communicating in writing?
Most interaction with your tutor and fellow classmates will be online through BayLearn. All assessments contain a written element.
Do you enjoy reading?
Course material includes a workbook which includes activities to help you complete your final assessment.
Are you comfortable with email, computers, and new technologies?
The online learning approach means you'll be required to use email, log on to the internet and of course use BayLearn. Once on BayLearn there are activities and forums you'll be required to take part in. With some courses there's also a CD Rom that will need to be operated.
Does your lifestyle (family, work, or personal schedule) make it difficult for you to attend courses during the day?
If you answered yes to the questions above, online learning could be the right option for you as you study in your own time at a pace that suits you and your lifestyle.
