Graduate: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science with Specialisation in Applied Computing
Employed: Origen, Tauranga

After nine years as a labourer in a cold storage facility, Albie decided to turn his lifelong love of computers into a career.

“My job was unfulfilling and I felt like I wasn’t reaching my full potential. I had only limited opportunities where I was. I’ve always been into computers and everyone knew me as ‘the computer guy’ so I thought why not?”

Albie soon realised it’s never too late to make a change. “From day one I loved studying the course. For a change I was learning stuff I really wanted to know. It was easy to learn because I loved the content. The tutors were really helpful and the Group Leader was incredibly supportive the whole way through.”

Because Albie was one of the outstanding students of the year, he was recommended by the Polytechnic to complete his final project with Tauranga based company, Origen. For three months he created a web application that tied into their existing applications. After the presentation of the completed projects at the end of the year his boss from Origen was waiting outside to offer him a full-time job.

“He said to me, ‘Albie, have you got a job yet?’ I said no, and he replied, ‘well you have now!’ I was really blown away. In fact, I was a little overwhelmed. It’s challenging every day and I  really love it. Origen is an awesome company. They really look after their staff and there’s heaps of perks working here. It’s a real buzz.”

A humble and unassuming guy, Albie didn’t realise he’d do so well during his three years at Polytechnic. During that time he gained nearly $5,000 worth of scholarship and prize money for getting the highest overall grades in four semesters and the highest mark for his final year project.

Looking back Albie believes his decision to study was paramount to reaching new heights in his life, not only for himself, but for his family. “It’s one of the best decisions I have ever  made in my life. Now that I am the first one in my family to get a degree, I can be a role model for the rest of my family. That feels really great!”

Alex Huber
International Student Alex Huber
Student: Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL5) Level 5

From Brugg, Switzerland

I’m just here for a year, with the whole family. As a family project we wanted to go abroad for a year to an English speaking country where we all learn English. I've been teaching for a while and I'd like to do something else, then get a new job when I get home, so I am studying computing and IT at BOPP.

My wife is studying as well. She's a chef in Switzerland.

When we chose to come to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic we looked for somewhere where our kids could go to school, where I could study computing and that had nice weather. We love outdoor activities, so Tauranga was where we ended up.

We love the location, the ocean and the beach. It’s great. The course at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is good. I like it.

I like the infrastructure and the reception by the locals was very nice.

International Student Amit Kamble
Student: Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL6) Level 6

From India

I’m from Maharashtra in India and chose to go to AUPP in Nagpur because they have very computer focused courses.

I would suggest to AUPP students to come here. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is really good and the pathway that I am doing is with the University of Waikato, which has really good world rankings in computer science.

Doing the diploma to degree pathway is a good opportunity, because in India we need to complete the degree, but the Level 6 diploma can also get you a good job here in New Zealand.

I study at the Bongard Campus. Being an international student has been an awesome experience. All my teachers are good, frank and friendly, ready to help every time. It has been a good opportunity for me. Apart from being a student, I’m also tutoring other students in web development and C programming; helping them and sharing my knowledge. I have also developed websites for a number of local companies.

I’m really enjoying living in Tauranga, it’s really beautiful. My home in Tauranga is really awesome. It’s me and other students, ten of us together. It’s like a big family. My most memorable experience has been the student ball last semester.

Brian Bullas
Computing graduate Brian Bullas
Student: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science with Specialisation in Applied Computing
Graduate: Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL5) Level 5, Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL6) Level 6
Employed: Part-time IT technician, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic

Three events seem to have transpired to bring Canadian-born Brian Bullas to this busy time and place in his life.

A serious snowboarding accident in British Columbia, Canada, had left Brian no longer able to walk, and his subsequent rehabilitation period allowed him to “re-think his life and how to go forward, rather than stay in the past”.

With a Kiwi wife and young son, Brian then made the decision to move to New Zealand, settling in the Bay of Plenty early in 2009.

By chance he saw an ad about programmes offered at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, which made him curious about considering a new career that would not only “pay the bills”, but also expand on a childhood fascination with computers.

From being a ‘self-taught’ lad who’d tinkered, pulled apart and learnt basic programming on a classic old Commodore 64, Brian took the opportunity to advance his skills by completing his Diploma in ICT Level 5 and in Applied Computing Level 6 at the Polytechnic.

“Being able to credit these IT qualifications directly into the Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Applied Computing, through the University of Waikato’s recently introduced partnership programme in Tauranga was a real incentive.”

A determined learner, Brian was recognised and rewarded with the ’Top Student Award’ at the end of his first year of study at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in 2009 and again at the end of his second year in 2010.

Brian’s successful studies undoubtedly helped him secure a part-time IT Technician position at the Polytechnic, helping maintain and support ICT systems used to deliver the institution’s computing programmes. And whilst completing his University of Waikato Applied Computing degree at the same time, Brian suggests his job complements his studies because it introduces him to “real life scenarios ... applying the theory that I have learned.”

He enjoys the challenges of IT networking, but looks to further his childhood passion for programming by moving into software development. “My dream job would be developing video games, but there’s a high demand for good business application developers too.”

Courtney Thorpe
Photo of Courtney Thorpe
Graduate: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science with Specialisation in Applied Computing
Employed: ISO Limited, Tauranga

A former Tauranga Girls’ College student, Courtney finished high school in 2006 and was lucky enough to be a recipient of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic‘s Pacific Coast Scholarship for her  studies at the Polytechnic in 2007. One of 25 scholarships available, the award paid her tuition fees for her first two years of study in the Bachelor of Computing Systems programme. Choosing to study at the Polytechnic was a bit of a no-brainer for Courtney.

“Gaining a scholarship was definitely a motivating factor. When I began investigating other computing degree programmes, I found the Polytech’s programme had less of a science focus and more design and projects based emphasis which was exactly what I was looking for in a degree programme."

"The computing systems programme was a three year degree qualification instead of four which was also great. Being able to complete my degree right here in Tauranga was fantastic as I  could live at home rent free.”

After graduation Courtney was offered a job with ISO Limited as a business analyst. “I’ve found the transition from study to work hasn’t been that daunting after all. I’m very confident in my  abilities and grateful to have studied at the Polytech in such a hands-on learning environment. My job is great. I’m currently project managing a new website for ISO, including designing the  new look and content. The role involves communication through all levels of the organisation to agree requirements, UI design, negotiations with external suppliers and contract documentation… so it’s pretty exciting.”

While content in her role, Courtney has caught the travel bug after her trip to Thailand at the start of the year and has planned to go overseas again. “Short term, I’m looking to travel to America, Canada and Europe at the end of the year. Long term, I intend to be an IT project manager for a large company.”

Karl Friend
Photo of Karl Friend
Student: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science with Specialisation in Applied Computing
Graduate: Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL6) Level 6, Certificate in Computing Level 3
Employed: Owner - Friendly Technology, Tauranga

Karl Friend is a 19 year old with a vision. By the end of 2010 he will have graduated with his Bachelor degree and by the end of 2011 he aims to own his own home with the  earnings of his very own fledgling, but highly lucrative, web design business, Friendly Technology.

Within months Karl will be promoting, to his current client base of 15 (and growing!) high profile companies, what he believes will be the fastest internet service in New Zealand.

This young go-getter has no qualms about taking on the big-wigs of Telecom and Vodafone. And that’s only the beginning.

“In 2011 I’m going to go nuts with my business. It’s already doing better than I ever expected. I’m juggling 40 hours of client work per week, plus full-time study, as well as my Youth  Leader role at Otumoetai Baptist."

"I owe my company to the Group Leader at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. It was her recommendation that got me my first contract with Bay Park to do their website. Now the work is  pouring in. That’s not all Karl has to say about gaining his qualifications with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

He believes he has gained a lot of skills and knowledge that has reinforced his own self taught learning that had already started when he was just 12 years old. He particularly enjoyed the networking and programming components of the programme and has since discovered his forté in web development.

Some drastic changes in Karl’s life in Hamilton forced him to cross the Kaimai’s and set up a new life in the Bay. He’s happy that circumstances brought him to Tauranga as he loves  it here and not only because of the weather. “I had no idea what I wanted to study but at 16 I really hated school so I thought I’d study something I’ve always had an interest and some experience in – computers. It turned out to be the best decision because now I’m doing what I love and I have this awesome business growing from it.“

Napinderjit Kaur
International Student Napinderjit Kaur
Student: Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL6) Level 6

From Jalandhar, Punjab, India

This is my second year at the Bay of Plenty Polytech. I don’t feel like an international student any more.

This year I complete my Level 6 Diploma of Applied Computing and next year go into the Level 7 Bachelor degree. I chose the pathway course because the degree has a benefit for me. I especially enjoy web designing. I remember one presentation I really enjoyed doing, about website design. Everyone in my group was a New Zealand student. They were really helpful to me. I was very nervous but got 94%!

I recommend Bay of Plenty Polytechnic for IT, as the programme is really good. I know the teachers in all my classes. They are really friendly and I like them.
