Aka Rakai Toi - Diploma in Art Level 6

Content Details

Year 1
Studio Practice 1

In the first year you will be introduced to a wide range of art disciplines that will include:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Digital photography
  • Printmaking

Added to this will be shorter intensives that may include specialist workshops.

Culture and Practice in Aotearoa
Examine the unique cultural influences of Aotearoa and explore how these are expressed through the creative arts. You will have the opportunity to explore your own cultural identity, values,  belief systems and world views. You’ll also develop an understanding of Te Ao Mäori and apply this learning to your work in the arts.

History, Culture, Context
This course focuses on the practical working relationship between theory and practice which will encourage you to develop informed and critical attitudes towards your own work as well as the work of other artists.

Year 2
Studio Practice 2

You will be encouraged to develop and extend your expertise in a specific area.

Business Skills for the Creative Industries
Develop skills to manage a business for your creative industry and learn how to position yourself in the market. We’ll teach you how to promote yourself and you’ll explore a range of presentation formats appropriate for marketing your art.

Contextual Studies
You will look at the development of the key arts movements in the 20th Century. This will give both knowledge and understanding of the history and context of art.

Entry

The minimum requirements for entry into this programme are:

  • a demonstrated commitment to visual art
  • a minimum of 4 years secondary schooling if enrolling immediately after completing secondary school, with 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in English and two other subjects
  • a portfolio of current artwork
  • adaptability, reliability, a positive outlook towards life, sensitivity and acceptance of other cultures.

Indicative Fees

  • $6,034 Year 1, incl. course related costs
  • $5,959 Year 2, incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
