National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical & Mechanical Engineering) Level 3

Calling all budding automotive technicians! Rev up your automotive career opportunities with this hands-on, practical course of study that qualifies you to work on light vehicles as a repair technician.

You'll work with minimal supervision using modern vehicle technologies, carrying out all types of service and repairs on light vehicles in our specialist automotive workshops. If you are passionate about modern automotive technology, are good at problem solving and willing to learn, then this is the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) Level 3 Light Vehicle Strand is for you.

Content Details

This programme is completed in 2 stages over two or three years depending whether you study full or part-time. Upon successful completion you'll gain the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) Level 3 Light Vehicle Strand. This qualification allows you to work in the industry as a service technician.

If you get a job at any stage during the programme, you can transfer your study to our managed apprenticeship part-time training model.

Stage 1

The 34 week full-time programme is broad based, covering the knowledge and skills to work at a service technician level. You'll carry out all standard servicing in an automotive  workshop (under supervision) which will include:

  • Minor scheduled servicing
  • Brake servicing
  • Wheel alignment
  • Electrical servicing
  • Cooling system servicing
  • Tune-up
  • Steering and suspension
  • General engineering tasks

You'll spend approximately one day per week in the classroom and two days in the workshop.

Work Experience
Included in the programme is a work experience component of one day per week, and three full weeks of work experience in industry. This allows you to use the skills you've learnt at the polytechnic in the workplace, and gain practical workplace experience and knowledge.

Stage 2

This programme will be offered 34 weeks full-time (one year) or part-time (up to a maximum of two years). You'll continue to build on your knowledge and skills at a repair technician level and you'll carry out standard servicing and repairs with minimal supervision. Content includes:

  • Major scheduled servicing
  • Cambelt servicing
  • Brake overhaul
  • Electrical and electronic diagnosis and repair
  • Cooling system overhaul
  • Diesel engine and turbo-charger servicing
  • Electronic and emission control servicing

You'll spend approximately one day per week in the classroom and two days in the workshop plus work experience.

Work Experience - Full-time study
Included in the programme is a work experience component of two days per week, and four full weeks of work experience in the industry.

Work Experience - Part-time study
As you are employed in the automotive industry, you'll be assessed by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic tutors in your workplace, in the classroom or in our specialist workshops. You will attend day release for integrated theory and practical training, and for some specialist practical assessments.

Stage 1
You must hold at least an NZTA Class 1R driver licence (car)

Stage 2
You must:
• Have successfully completed Stage 1 or have equivalent credits from another provider
• and, hold a Class 1 or Class 1R driver licence (car)

Full-time Option
If you wish to study full-time you must apply for a position on the programme and be accepted, as places are limited

Part-time Option
If you choose to study the programme part-time you must be employed in the automotive industry

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $6,316 - Stage 1, incl. course related costs
  • $6,506 - Stage 2, incl. course related costs
  • $900 - Stage 1 & 2 part-time per year

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

  • Comprehensive First Aid Certificate

Stage 2

  • National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) Level 3 Light Vehicle Strand
