National Certificate in Beauty Services (Cosmetology) Level 3

You know you like the beauty industry, but perhaps you're unsure which particular career path you should study. This introductory course covers a wide range of beauty services including practical experience which will allow you to identify your strengths and areas of interest. Credits from this course can be applied to further study programmes at the Polytechnic.

The programme includes courses in hair care, facials, make-up applications, nail care, fragrance and men's and women's toiletries, customer service and sales, as well as health and safety.

Content Details

During the programme you will develop your skills in:

  • Cosmetic services including mini facials, eyelash tinting, eyebrow shaping, and make-up applications
  • Manicure and pedicure services
  • Customer service and sales including fragrance layering, hair care, men’s and women’s toiletries
  • Health, safety and first aid
  • Fragrance layering
  • Men’s and women’s toiletries

Practical Experience
Throughout the programme you will gain practical experience in our training classrooms.

Customer Service and Sales
We will teach you how to sell goods and services relevant to the beauty industry and how to provide great customer service while on reception. You will also learn cashier skills that are necessary in any retail business.

Cosmetic Services Practical
You’ll learn to confidently provide a range of beauty services including manicure, pedicure and cosmetic services. You will become knowledgeable in the selection and use of cosmetics and  toiletries so that you can confidently provide advice to customers.

Health and Safety
Health and safety concepts within the workplace are covered in this course. You will also learn how to carry out first aid in emergency situations.

Entry

The minimum requirements are:

10 NCEA unit/achievement standards Level 1 credits in literacy (English) and numeracy (Maths)

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,225 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:

• National Certificate in Beauty Services (Cosmetology) Level 3
• Comprehensive First Aid Certificate

Career Opportunities

At the completion of the programme you could gain employment in retail, selling cosmetics and toiletries in department stores or beauty salons, or doing makeup for hairdressing salons.
