Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc)

If you want to work with, and are enthusiastic about people, policy, planning or research, this course of study is for you. Career prospects include public relations co-ordinator, recruitment officer, human resource manager, political analyst, social scientist, and researcher.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) looks at how people and society interact and change. You'll gain knowledge of human behaviour, social science and methodology, as well as critical analysis and communication skills.

Completing the New Zealand Diploma in Business with a B grade average may gain you up to nine of the required 20 papers for the BSocSc.

Content Details

To gain a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree you need to complete 20 papers full-time over three years or equivalent part-time study. If you wish to major in Human Resources and Industrial Relations and gain a maximum of 9 papers towards the BSocSc degree you need to include the following papers in your NZDipBus:

520 The Economic Environment
530 Organisation and Management
633 Human Resource Management (530)
635 Employment Relations
ECON200 Macroeconomics and the Global Economy

Students should contact the Group Leader to ensure their paper selections gain maximum credits for the major they wish to complete. For the final papers of the BSocSc you enrol with the University of Waikato.

Entry

If you are under 20 years of age you must have:

  • A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework
  • 50 credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of 3 subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Mäori; 4 credits must  be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards
  • or, equivalent to the above

If you are over 20 years of age this requirement may be waived. The selection process may include an information evening. The group leader may allow students discretionary entry on a case-by-case basis, if they are satisfied that the student has the necessary skills and support to succeed in the programme.

The Group Leader, New Zealand Diploma in Business, may allow students on a case-by-case basis, discretionary entry if satisfied that the student has the necessary skills and support to succeed in the programme.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 6 or TOEFL score of 550.

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of 12 specified Bay of Plenty Polytechnic papers;

  • You will be awarded the New Zealand Diploma in Business Level 6
  • With a B grade average you are guaranteed credit for 9 papers toward the Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc)

Upon successful completion of the entire programme you will receive from the University of Waikato, your Bachelor of Social Sciences.
