New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) Level 6

This course of study provides you with a wide range of business skills and knowledge including accounting, law, economics, management, communications, computing and marketing.

After 6 compulsory courses you can choose to specialise in either accounting, management, marketing or tourism.

The NZDipBus incorporates the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) Diploma in Management.

Content Details

The NZDipBus is made up of 12 papers including 6 compulsory papers. Papers are offered on a semester basis. There are 2 semesters in an academic year, i.e. February to June,  and July to November. We also have a summer school from January to February. Six of the following 7 papers must be completed:

400 Accounting Principles
510 Introduction to Commercial Law
520 The Economic Environment
530 Organisation and Management
541 Fundamentals of Marketing
550 Business Computing
560 Business Communication

You must complete another 6 papers, of which at least 4 must be level 6 - refer to the List of Papers in the brochure.

Specialisation
You may choose to complete a general NZDipBus made up of your own choice of optional papers or specialise in the following areas:

Accounting and Accounting Technician
If you wish to complete the NZDipBus specialising in accounting, or wish to qualify for membership of the College of Accounting Technicians, you need to pass the following 12 papers:
400 Accounting Principles
501 Accounting Practices (400)
510 Introduction to Commercial Law
520 The Economic Environment
530 Organisation and Management
550 Business Computing
560 Business Communication
601 Financial Accounting (400, 501)
602 Management Accounting (400, 501)

Plus two of:
603 Business Finance (400)
605 Internal Auditing
606 Taxation (400) (501 recommended)

Plus 1 optional paper

If you wish to qualify for membership of the College of Accounting Technicians you need to complete 1 year of professional work experience, register as a professional member of the  New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and attend a 1 day induction course.

Chartered Accountant
To become a chartered accountant you can complete the NZDipBus and then the BMS majoring in Accounting. On completion of the academic study required for admission, you are required to register as a professional member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and complete the required work experience.

Entry

If you are under 20 years of age you must have:

  • A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework
  • 50 credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of 3 subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Mäori; 4 credits must  be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards
  • or, equivalent to the above.

If you are over 20 years of age this requirement may be waived. The selection process may include an information evening. The group leader may allow students discretionary entry on a case-by-case basis, if they are satisfied that the student has the necessary skills and support to succeed in the programme.

The Group Leader, New Zealand Diploma in Business, may allow students on a case-by-case basis, discretionary entry if satisfied that the student has the necessary skills and support to succeed in the programme.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 6 or TOEFL score of 550.

Indicative Fees

  • $763 per paper, incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the required number and mix of papers you will receive the internationally recognised:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) Level 6
