Certificate in Carpentry Level 3

Build a house, build a future! Start your carpentry apprenticeship here by completing our 34 week Certificate programme. With a team, you’ll build a house and learn the process along the way - everything from foundations to finishings. Get the satisfaction of combining the physical experience of building a house while understanding the theory behind each stage.

You’ll gain the majority of the theory courses towards the National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 and turn your work experience into an apprenticeship to complete your trades qualification.

After completing the programme it will take you three and a half to four years of site work to complete your National Certificate and become a qualified builder.

Content Details

This programme provides a mix of theory knowledge and practical skills required to enter, or continue in the carpentry/construction industry. Theory content includes:

  • Construction of residential houses and aspects of light commercial building techniques
  • Use and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Building terminology
  • Safety and first aid

Practical skills will be developed through the building of a house on campus.

After completing this programme, it will take you 3 1/2 - 4 years of site work to complete your National Certificate and become a qualified builder.

Work Experience
Included in the programme is a work experience component of 20 days, which can be completed 2 days/week or during work experience and term break blocks. This is so you can use the skills you have learnt at the polytechnic in the workplace and gain practical on-site experience and knowledge.

Preference will be given to those who have completed a minimum of 3 years secondary schooling and at least 8 unit / achievement standard credits in 2 of the following subjects - English, maths, workshop technology or graphic design (technical drawing), or equivalent knowledge.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $5,360 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
