If you like working outdoors and building things, consider this course of study as a broad introduction to the building industry. You'll get a variety of building construction skills and theory related to employment as a labourer, hammer hand or apprentice.

Get hands-on training in the use of power tools and hand tools, you'll develop skills in concreting, fencing, paving, construction of garden furniture and retaining walls, and heaps more.

Content Details

This programme covers a range of practical and theoretical skills relevant to the building industry and includes the National Certificate in Building, Construction & Allied Trade Skills Level 2. Content includes:

  • Protection of health and safety in the workplace
  • Use of hand tools
  • Use of compound mitre saw and portable electric tools
  • Basic woodworking and elementary construction
  • Minor concrete works including paving blocks and slabs
  • Retaining walls
  • Residential maintenance
  • Pergola construction
  • Utility building construction
  • Fence construction
  • Preparation of working sketches and drawings
  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving
  • Off-campus community building projects
  • First aid

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $4,317 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
