National Certificate in Carpentry (national trade qualification) Level 4

Study to become a qualified builder with this flexible course that can be completed while you work and on-site.

Are you or want to be an apprentice carpenter? Or are you working in the building industry? To become a qualified builder you need to complete this national qualification. Training and assessment will occur in partnership with you and your employer each year to suit your individual work situation.

Content Details

To become a qualified builder you need to gain the National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4. To be awarded this qualification you need to complete:

  • 42 theory units
  • 17 compulsory practical units
  • 10 out of 20 elective practical units
  • 3 compulsory First Aid units

Units will be selected in partnership with you and your employer each year to suit your individual work situation.

Theory
Block courses are run throughout the year for those who need to complete theory units.

Practical
For the practical units you are required to complete, we’ll monitor and assess your skills on-site at your place of employment. This will take place on a regular basis in conjunction with your employer.

Entry

You need to be employed within the building industry, with an employer who is prepared to support your training. It is desirable for you to have at least 10 credits towards NCEA at Level 1 in each of English and maths.

Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)
RCC is available to current tradespeople seeking the national carpentry qualification. Applicants must be currently working in the building construction industry and have at least 7 years experience. You’ll work with a polytechnic carpentry tutor to present evidence of your existing knowledge and skills in the trade.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $820 per year incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
