National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) Level 5

Are you currently working as a construction supervisor? Maybe you have building and construction experience and want to move into a supervisory role. This 2 year, part-time course of study will formalise your skills and enhance your career options in the building industry.

The building and construction industry in New Zealand has undergone large changes over the past few years. These changes have involved reviewing and upgrading the Building Code with an increased demand for higher level education to meet the more specialised and technical building construction trends.

The National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) Level 5 is a programme specially designed to meet the needs of supervisors on-site. The aim of the programme is to equip people  who are already working as a construction supervisor, or those wishing to move into the role, with skills and knowledge required of construction supervisors in the building and  construction industry.

You’ll gain the required technical and supervisory skills, and take courses in advanced construction, construction management and health and safety.

Content Details

The qualification comprises compulsory supervisory and technical standards designed to assess a broad range of knowledge and skills. You'll complete the programme over 2 years in the sequence below.

The programme has 4 courses covering a range of technical and supervisory skills as follows:

Year 1

Course One – Leading Hand Management Skills
You'll gain skills to implement health and safety procedures, apply enactments to building site operations, apply time management concepts and methods in business situations as a first line manager, and manage interpersonal conflict.

Course Two – Advanced Construction
You'll develop skills and knowledge to prepare order lists for a residential or light commercial building, follow working drawings, specifications and quantity lists, and supervise installation of weatherproofing systems and nonstructural exterior building finishes.

Year 2

Course Three – Construction Management
You'll gain skills and knowledge to prepare an outline construction programme for a project, supervise installation of building site excavation support systems and sub-trades, and manage a construction site operation.

Course Four – Specialist Subjects
This course provides you with background knowledge in the following specialist disciplines:

  • Survey requirements for the set-out of medium buildings
  • Applications and production of pre-cast concrete units and installation supervision
  • Construction methods and installation supervision of proprietary ceiling and wall systems

The minimum requirements for entry to this programme are:

English Language Requirements:

If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $1,215 Year 1 incl. course related costs
  • $1,233 Year 2 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

  • National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) Level 5
  • Site Safe Supervisor Gold Card (if applicable)

On successful completion of Year One you will be eligible to apply to NZQA for:

  • National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) Level 4
