This full-time programme will provide you with support while you develop your skills, knowledge and competence to load, unload, and drive a heavy rigid vehicle, up to 18 tonnes, safely and lawfully and to contribute to the efficient conduct of that service.
Content Details
The programme includes:
- Safe driving skills and knowledge of traffic law to meet requirements for a NZ Transport Agency Class 2 Driver Licence
- Presentation, safety and communication skills to assist you to participate competently in the workplace
- Commercial road transport driving skills and risk reduction techniques that will prepare you to contribute to road transport services
- Vehicle systems knowledge, loading procedures and restraint systems
- Communication in the workplace, to recognise stress and health issues, and to develop an understanding of the New Zealand Road Transport industry
Work Experience
You will spend regular time (up to 2 days per week) on work experience with commercial truck companies, gaining valuable experience driving and other associated tasks.
Strands (Part-time)
After gaining the Certificate in Commercial Road Transport Level 3 you can continue your training part-time to gain your Class 4 and Class 5 licences. This provides a flexible pathway for you to gain the skills and licences to drive big rigs. You're expected to be employed within the commercial road transport industry.
Strand 1 - Class 4 Truck Driver
Learn safe driving skills and knowledge of vehicle dynamics to operate a heavy rigid motor vehicle, and meet requirements for a NZ Transport Agency Class 4 Driver Licence.
Strand 2 - Class 5 Truck Driver
Further develop your skills, knowledge and experience to be able to operate and drive heavy combination vehicles (trucks with trailers and articulated vehicles) up to 44 tonnes, and gain your NZ Transport Agency Class 5 Driver Licence.
The programme includes:
- Practical driving skills
- Backing skills
- Knowledge of stress and fatigue management
- Heavy vehicle combination dynamics
Entry
You must:
- Obtain a NZ Transport Agency DL 9 medical certificate (available from your medical practitioner) just prior to the start of the programme. The medical certificate remains valid for 60 days. Once registered against a licence it remains current for five years.
- Hold a NZ Transport Agency Class 1 Driver Licence for more than six months prior to the programme start.
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to drive a vehicle with manual transmission.
You will be required to read and comprehend various transport laws and regulations, therefore you will require:
- NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy or
- Unit Standard 1279 - Write in Plain English or
- Be able to demonstrate equivalent skills, knowledge and competence

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.
Indicative Fees
- $3,291 core course, incl. course related costs
- $604 Strand 1 - Class 4 Truck Driver incl. course related costs
- $876 Strand 2 - Class 5 Truck Driver incl. course related costs
The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.
An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
