Certificate in Teacher Aide Practice Level 4

If you have the drive and passion to help children succeed, this half year course of study is for you. Teacher aides support children's learning at primary, intermediate and secondary schools and is a hugely rewarding career.

Training with us as a teacher aide will equip you with the academic and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in this role. You'll learn how to assist teachers in a classroom by working with students on a one-on-one basis or in groups.

Your take courses for two days a week and gain experience by working (paid or voluntary) as a teacher aide.

Content Details

School Structure, Policy and the Role of a Teacher Aide
Provides an overview of legislation, ethics and constructs relevant to a teacher aide in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will gain knowledge of the school setting, educational policy, and duties of the teacher aide position.

Child Development and the Process of Working with Children
An introduction to some of the cognitive theories and processes of learning. We look at ways you can apply these to help children learn.

Curriculum Development and Support
Learn about the New Zealand curriculum and methods of teaching literacy, numeracy, and Information and Communication Technology in appropriate ways for a range of ages and  abilities.

The Reflective Practitioner
Gain the skills, knowledge and attitude required for effective delivery as a support person in a school setting. You will learn to respond reflectively to a range of experiences, including the unique needs of Mäori learners, and on improving your own practice as a result of reflection.

Work Placement
While the programme coordinator may be able to support and guide students in the work placement process, it is each student’s responsibility to secure their own placement.

Entry

  • At least three years secondary school education with at least 14 unit/achievement standard credits at level 2 English and at least 12 unit/achievement standard credits at Level 1 maths
  • or, successful completion of Certificate in Tertiary Studies Level 2
  • or, completed any Level 3 course and demonstrated understanding of what teacher aiding involves
  • or, be either working as a teacher aide or willing to gain employment in this field while studying

Police Check
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will complete a police clearance check on prospective students and entry will be provisional until these have been completed.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,444 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:
