Electrical Service Technician/Appliance Serviceperson/Appliance Serviceperson (Endorsed)

This course of study will suit you if you already have some experience in an electrical workplace. Once you've successfully completed the course and a term of practical on-the-job experience, you'll be legally qualified to work on a range of electrical appliances. You'll also be endorsed to disconnect and reconnect fixed-wired appliances.

The Electrical Service Technician programme satisfies the requirements for the new EWRB qualifications for limited registration. The programme incorporates:

  • Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (EAS)
  • Electrical Appliance Serviceperson - endorsed to disconnect and connect (EASQ). Enrolling in EASQ includes the EAS content
  • Electrical Service Technician (EST). Enrolling in EST includes the EAS and EASQ content

EAS and EASQ classes take place on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5.30-9.00pm, with an examination on Saturday, 23 June.

EST classes take place on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5.30-9.00pm until 19 June and then Tuesday evenings from 26 June through to the end of the course. The examination is held on Saturday, 15 June.

Content Details

The programme is both theoretical and practical with emphasis on safety, measurement techniques and safe working practices. It is expected you will have had some experience in an electrical workplace. Basic first aid and CPR training is included in EAS.

Entry

You should be working under supervision in the electrical industry. You will need to provide evidence of this when you apply to EWRB to gain the class of Registration.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

  • EAS $1,248 incl. course related costs
  • EASQ $1,248 incl. course related costs (incl. EAS)
  • EST $1,896 incl. course related costs (incl. EAS/EASQ)

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

In addition to these assessments, the EWRB requires a term of practical on-job experience prior to registration. Successful participants are legally allowed to work in the following areas:

  • EAS - Maintenance of electrical appliances supplied by flexible cord or fixed-wired up to 230 volts
  • EASQ - As above, but endorsed to disconnect and reconnect fixed-wired appliances
  • EST - Maintenance, disconnection and reconnection of electrical appliances supplied by flexible cord or fixed-wired up to 460 volts
