Certificate in Fashion Studies (Apparel Manufacture) Level 3

This course of study will appeal if you'd like to work in the fashion industry as a contract sewer or dressmaker, doing alterations, or working in other areas of manufacture like soft furnishing or drapes, or doing sewing repairs.

You'll gain sewing skills and knowledge about industrial sewing techniques, garment construction and pattern making techniques, and you'll gain experience in fashion production.  This programme also prepares you for further study including the Diploma in Design (Fashion) Level 6.

Content Details

Sewing Skills
You'll gain a thorough understanding of how to use industrial sewing techniques and learn the skills that will give your work a professional finish. This includes:

  • How to set up the machines to sew a wide range of fabrics including lightweight evening fabrics and knit products
  • Industrial sewing methods for a variety of styling features such as pockets, collars, zips, sleeves and cuffs
  • Basic sewing machine maintenance

Garment Construction
You'll be taught piece work and full garment construction, as well as the essential skills of construction sequences and costing your work and time. During this course you'll make a variety of garments covering a range of styles and features that will extend your knowledge and skills.

Pattern Making Techniques
The equipment and techniques used in pattern making will be covered in this course. You’ll learn how to make patterns for a range of styles and to grade garments for a variety of sizes.

Fashion Industry Experience
You’ll gain an understanding of the different facets of the industry first hand. We'll introduce you to the variety of careers available in the fashion and related industries, and you'll learn  safe working practices and how to present yourself in a professional manner.

Entry

Open entry, although the skills for this programme require a high degree of manual dexterity. Academic subjects that would assist school leavers in this programme include textiles, technology, art and design.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,965 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
