Want to work as a graphic designer? This course of study will arm you with all the skills you need to get an entry level job in the graphic design industry, and to advance to further study in this exciting field.

If you have an eye for design, colour and composition, and relish the idea of working in a fast-paced environment, a career as a graphic designer could be for you. You'll learn creative and technical design skills on the Mac platform from tutors experienced in illustration, print, press, multimedia and web.

The programme teaches courses in software applications, design research, visual and conceptual design, design and studio practice, and web design, and you'll get work experience as well.

Content Details

Apple Mac and Software Skills
You will gain knowledge of the Apple Macintosh operating system and operator skills in a range of design industry software applications.

Design Research
You’ll learn skills and gain knowledge for researching design projects, production of conceptual design ideas and selection of materials and manufacturing processes in the initial stages of the design process.

Typographic Layouts
Learn about production of typographic layouts and associated composition skills for visual communication techniques.

Planning and Approval
This course will equip you with the appropriate communications skills to obtain client approval, and to formally prepare, plan and present design project work to a specified brief.

Graphic Communication
We’ll teach you introductory skills in creating successful graphic designs for marketing and promotion.

Print Production, Processes and Systems
This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge required for print production, ensuring compliance with project specifications and contractual arrangements.

Multimedia and Web Design
You’ll gain skills in multimedia presentations and digital moving images, as well as front-end webpage design techniques.

Work Experience
The programme includes a work experience component so you can use the skills you have learnt at the polytechnic in the workplace, and gain practical experience.

Entry

It is preferred that applicants have NZQA unit/ NCEA achievement standard credits at level 2 or higher in any of art/design/photography/English and experience of computer technology.

At the interview all applicants must submit a portfolio of current artwork for evaluation.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $5,719 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
