Certificate in Health Care Assistance Level 4

There's increasing demand for health care professionals in hospitals, rest homes and home support providers in New Zealand. This course of study gives you the skills and confidence to work at an assistant level within a range of community and health care occupations.

You'll attend class two days a week and gain experience in the industry by working (paid or voluntary) as a health care assistant.

Programme content includes courses in cultural awareness, professional practice, working with older people and people with disabilities, anatomy and physiology, community health and first aid.

Content Details

Cultural Awareness
Gain an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its significance to New Zealand society. You will explore your own cultural heritage and gain an understanding of the influence of culture on people’s health and wellbeing. This will help you understand and develop culturally appropriate practices.

Anatomy and Physiology
Examine anatomy and physiology of all the major body systems and gain an in-depth view of how these systems function.

Professional Practice
Develop lifelong learning processes and study skills, along with effective communication skills, that are likely to lead to a successful career. You will identify factors and gain knowledge and skills which maintain and promote health. Beliefs, values and attitudes will be examined to enable you to give effective care and support.

Comprehensive First Aid
Gain comprehensive training in first aid with nationally recognised unit standards.

Working with Older People & People with Disabilities
Develop skills to be able to interact with older adults in a way that respects and values their individuality. The module promotes safe practice when supporting and assisting older adults and people with disabilities.

Community Health
Explore concepts of health and safety, loss and grief, and community services. You’ll become familiar with regulatory requirements in the health sector.

Work Experience
A work experience component of 200 hours is required to successfully complete this programme. Your regular health-related employment will count towards the required 200 hours.

Entry

  • A minimum of three years secondary education or relevant life/work experience
  • Be able to demonstrate that you have the ability, interest and motivation to succeed in the programme
  • Have good communication and team skills
  • Be either working in the health care industry or willing to gain employment in this field while studying.

You may be advised to enrol on the short course Tools for Academic Study before the programme starts.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $1,443 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:

  • Certificate in Health Care (Assistance) Level 4
  • Comprehensive First Aid Certificate
