Turn your interest in this ancient, natural healing technique into a qualified career as a massage therapist. You'll study courses and practice a range of relaxation massage skills and techniques including Indian head massage, reflexology (zone therapy) and on-site chair massage.

The therapeutic benefits of massage are now fully recognised within mainstream medicine.

You'll learn about the human body and its systems, professional practice skills and allied massage therapies.

Content Details

The programme includes a mix of both theory (approximately 35%) and practical application (approximately 65%).

The Human Body
You’ll gain a foundation understanding and knowledge of the basic structure and function of the body’s ten systems.

Foundations of Massage
The underlying principles of theoretical knowledge and practical skills for relaxing massage in a professional setting is covered in this course.

Professional Practice
With practice you will develop confidence in your massage skills and be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of clients in a professional relaxation setting.

Allied Therapies
A range of complementary therapies are practiced in this course including zone therapy (reflexology), Indian head massage and on-site chair massage. You’ll also learn how to  promote healthy lifestyles and communicate effectively with people from varied cultures.

Comprehensive First Aid
This course equips you with the skills to be able to carry out first aid in emergencies and in a massage setting.

Entry

School leavers need to have:

  • completed four years of secondary education and at least 12 NCEA/unit standard credits at Level 2. Suggested subjects; English, physical education and/or biology.
  • OR the Certificate in Tertiary Studies Level 2

Massage therapy is a physically demanding occupation and practitioners need to have a good standard of physical fitness as well as manual dexterity.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,716 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
