National Certificate in Horticulture (Fruit Production Strand) Level 2

Want to improve your horticultural knowledge and your career opportunities? This course of study is designed to be completed part-time over one year, while you keep on working in the industry, so you can continue to earn while you learn. This is the first of the three possible years of study.

This programme has been developed to give you a background in the core horticultural sciences, with options in specialist areas for your chosen field. This knowledge will be an invaluable asset as you progress through your horticultural career. You'll be taught theory aspects of all subjects along with appropriate practical training.

Where possible theory lessons will coincide with tasks carried out in industry.

Work Experience
Your learning will be complemented with the practical work carried out by you in your every day employment. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic staff will visit you and your employer in the workplace to ensure your study is on-track.

Entry

It is preferable that you are either employed, have previous relevant experience, or wish to further your knowledge in the horticulture industry. You may be required to attend an interview to confirm your suitability.

English Language Requirements

If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $150 Year 1 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Depending on your choice of subjects, successful completion of the three year course may include strands in one or more of the following:

  • National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) Level 2 

Career Opportunities

Completion of the full programme enhances your opportunities to gain promotions and work as a packhouse manager/supervisor, coolstore manager, field services operations, in sales and marketing or research, as a property manager, in orchard leasing, or contracting.
