National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) Level 2

Don't mind getting your hands dirty? You have an interest in the environment and the science of plants? Learn essential horticulture knowledge including plant science, pests and diseases, agrichemicals, propagation, pruning and weed control.

Get a feel for horticulture with our 17 week programme. You'll gain the introductory knowledge and skills for the horticulture industry.

Content Details

Plant Science I
This course looks at plant structure, function, plant processes, life-cycles and plant identification.

Soils
Learn about soil environments, the use of fertilisers and how they affect plant growth.

Pests and Diseases I
Learn to identify plant pests, diseases, disorders, and how to control them.

Propagation I
Gain an understanding of the different methods of plant propagation.

Vehicles
Learn how to drive a tractor and an all terrain vehicle (ATV).

Agrichemicals
This course provides you with the knowledge and skills to identify and interpret agrichemical product information.

The Horticulture Industry
Learn how to maintain and document work records for horticulture activities.

First Aid
You will learn to manage emergency situations, provide first aid and resuscitation.

Health & Safety
Understand how to be safe in the work environment.

Field Trip
You'll visit a range of horticulture businesses and service sectors.

Entry

Students are more likely to succeed if they have life and/or work experience that is relevant to the programme and are able to demonstrate ability, interest, motivation, literacy and numeracy to the required level.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,617 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

With the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 4 you may gain entry level positions in the following sectors, nursery production, fruit production, amenity or landscaping, viticulture, arboriculture, sports turf, vegetable production, floriculture, horticulture service sectors.
