Certificate in Cafe Operations Level 2

Want to be a barista or work in a cafe or bar? You'll get plenty of real life experience from this entry level course of study and you'll earn the opportunity to further your studies in the vibrant hospitality industry.

The programme will help you gain the practical skills you need to serve customers and prepare food and beverages within the hospitality sector. As part of this programme you'll be working in an on-site cafe open to the public, and in the industry one day a week.

Content Details

This qualification will provide you with barista, food safety, food preparation, food presentation, and customer service skills and knowledge.

Barista Skills
Learn about:
• Coffee heritage, production and culture
• Espresso coffee equipment and recipes

We’ll teach you how to prepare and present espresso beverages for service.

Café Food Preparation and Presentation
In a commercial kitchen you’ll learn to:
• Cook food by grilling
• Prepare and cook basic pastry dishes
• Bake basic cakes, sponges and scones
• Prepare and present basic sandwiches
• Prepare and present salads

Café Service Skills
This course includes:
• Preparing and serving hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks in a commercial hospitality environment
• Learning to provide basic table service in a commercial hospitality environment
• Your personal presentation
• How to greet customers
• Dealing with customer complaints

Café Hygiene and Safety
We’ll teach you and you will get to practice food safety methods in a food business.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $931 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Upon successful completion of this programme you will receive:

  • Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Achievement Record
