Marine Studies Teaching Resources

The marine studies smartpath programme consists of resource kits which directly relate to national unit standards under the NZQA. Each kit includes PowerPoint slides, field trip outlines, assessments, teacher notes, student handouts and information sheets as well as a teaching scheme. There are six resource kits.

Marine Reserves Resource Kit

This resource kit can be used for Year 12 or Year 13 biology achievement standards or Level 3 NZQA unit standard 6319 - Make an informed judgement on a contemporary biological issue (3 credits). Topics covered include:

  • Research techniques
  • The nature of marine reserves
  • Biological concepts related to marine reserves
  • Implications of marine reserves for marine life
  • Marine monitoring 
  • The implications of marine reserves for science

Taxonomy and Invertebrates Resource Kit

The resource kit is designed to meet the learning outcomes of the level 4 NZQA Unit 8099 – Identify Flora and Fauna (2 credits).  This kit focuses on classification of marine organisms (in this case marine invertebrates) through use of taxonomic keys.  Topics covered include:

  • History of and function of taxonomy and classification 
  • Taxonomic keys
  • The five kingdoms
  • Invertebrates and invertebrate identification
  • Basic field and lab identification of marine invertebrates

Marine Ecology Resource Kit

This kit focuses on key aspects of marine ecology and is designed to meet the learning outcomes of the level 4 NZQA Unit 26510 – Demonstrate Knowledge of Ecosystems (6 credits).  Topics covered in the kit include:

  • The relationship between organisms and their distribution in the abiotic environment
  • Ecological flows and cycles
  • Ecological niches
  • Survivorship
  • R and K strategists
  • Inter-specific relationships 
  • Community change
  • Ecological succession
  • Ecosystems and the impact of human activity on those systems

Marine Surveying Programme & Resource Kit

  • Marine species common to local dive sites (these can be adapted to different bio-regions)

  • Practical training – confined water survey training and open water survey training

Please Note: This programme has a pre-requisite of Unit 4384 Scuba dive and perform rescues in open water to a maximum depth of 18 meters or Unit 4383 Snorkel dive with safety. It includes a significant practical component that can be conducted using SCUBA or snorkel and must be supervised qualified SCUBA or snorkel instructors.

Aquaculture Investigative Study Resource Kit

This resource kit incorporates Level 3 NZQA Unit 8933 – Relate aspects of animal behaviour to environmental factors (3 credits). Topics covered include:

  • Log keeping
  • Animal experimentation
  • Morphology of the paddle crab
  • Behaviour of the paddle crab
