2011 Marine Field Trip
Once again it's been action at the start of the year. The annual sandcastle competition once again produced some good sculptures from the 60 first years.
Our year two students have just returned from either 10 days at Slipper and the Aldermans or 10 days at Tuhua. The Slipper crew was blessed with fine weather, calm seas and 30m vis while the Tuhua crew did a fine surveying job in strong winds and a consistent 2m swell. Department of Conservation staff were very impressed with their effort and skills. Hammerhead sharks were sighted by both groups and unusually a group of skipjack tuna swum through some divers. Photos will follow soon.
We have 20 students heading up in two groups to Lissenung Island in Papua New Guinea in June/July and October as part of their Coral Reef Ecology and Monitoring course. They are looking forward to some fantastic experiences up there.
