Get the knowledge and qualifications you need to take command of a restricted limits ship and/or an inshore vessel.

The programme, which is a mandatory requirement of Maritime New Zealand (MNZ), will prepare you for examination for the Inshore Launchmaster Certificate of Competency.

Content Details

The ILM programme includes four courses:

  • Nautical
  • Maritime Restricted Operator's Certificate
  • Engineering
  • Restricted Radar Observer’s Certificate

If you are not enrolling in the complete ILM programme and instead in specific courses only, please indicate this on your enrolment form. 

Entry

Examination Requirements

Sea-time
You must provide evidence of having completed 18 months sea service as a deckhand or in a higher deck position including:

  • Twelve months sea service in the last 10 years
  • Six months sea service on commercial vessels of not less than six metres
  • Two months sea service on vessels of 20 metres or less in length

Minimum Age
18 years

Testimonials
A testimonial of character, ability and sobriety, covering at least the past 12 months, is to be sent to MNZ with your application.

Eyesight
You must pass the MNZ prescribed eyesight test by an MNZ approved Optometrist, before examination.

Other Requirements
Valid Comprehensive First Aid Certificate. If you require this we can arrange it for you.

Examination Application/Fee
It is recommended that you apply to MNZ at least 21 days before the programme begins to obtain your permit. You must have a MNZ permit to be allowed to sit your examination. There is a separate fee of $416.04 which you are required to pay to MNZ with your application (subject to change).

  • ILM $1,383 incl. course related costs
  • Nautical $550
  • Maritime Restricted Operator's Certificate $73
  • Engineering $460
  • Restricted Radar Observer's Certificate $300

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the programme and meeting examination requirements, you will receive:

  • Certificate in Inshore LaunchmasterLevel 3
  • Inshore Launchmaster - Certificate of Competency (from MNZ)
