National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Nautical Skills) - Advanced Deckhand (F) Level 3

Advanced Deckhand (with Fishing Endorsement) is the first step on the ladder to a qualification in the New Zealand fishing industry. Study while you work and get this nationally recognised certificate and on meeting Maritime New Zealand requirements you can gain the Advanced Deckhand Fishing Endorsed qualification.

If you're currently working as a deckhand on a commercial vessel, but don’t have a qualification, then this course is for you.

The programme is taught by distance learning (correspondence), which means you can continue to work while you study. You have up to 28 weeks to complete four modules by working through theory-based task books, and practical assessments which are to be signed-off by your captain. You will also be required to attend a week of practical training and assessment at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga.

  • Module 1 - Seamanship
  • Module 2 - Navigation
  • Module 3 - Rope, chain, and wire handling
  • Module 4 - Sea survival, fire safety, and prevention of pollution

Entry

Open entry, subject to MNZ requirements being met.

You must complete all sea-time requirements before MNZ will issue an examination permit. For full details of sea service requirements refer to the MNZ website.

Indicative Fees

  • The programme is FREE for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.
  • Note: There is a fee of $416.04 which you are required to pay to MNZ with your application (subject to change).

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Upon successful completion of the programme:

  • National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Nautical Skills) Level 3

Upon meeting examination requirements, you will receive from MNZ:

  • Advanced Deckhand (with Fishing Endorsement)
