Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Basic)

If you want to get a job on a cruise ship, super yacht, oil rig, merchant vessel or in the commercial maritime industry, you'll be needing this certificate. There's no sea time involved and the whole course takes just a week to complete.

Standards of Training Certification & Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Basic) is an international requirement for anyone wishing to work in just about any sea-based occupation. The certificate is accredited by Maritime New Zealand. This is an updated version of STCW95.

The programme is comprised of four courses:

  • Firefighting & Fire Prevention (Basic)
  • Sea Survival Techniques (Basic Sea Survival)
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities
  • Comprehensive First Aid

During your week with us we'll also provide you with free access to our gym and pool facilities.

Entry

You must be fit and capable of undertaking training for sea survival and firefighting. You will be required to swim in a pool with and without a lifejacket and stay afloat (tread water) while wearing clothing.

You will be required to provide, on your first day, a medical certificate signed by a general practitioner stating you are fit to undertake these physical activities.

Indicative Fees

  • $1,610 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:

  • STCW Basic issued by Maritime New Zealand
