You'll learn a wide range of skills utilised within the industry, and use industry standard technical equipment.

Content Details

Course 1 - Announcing
This course teaches you how to manage studio equipment and software. Local radio personalities teach you how to prepare and present radio programmes in individual and tandem capacity. Other specialist tutors deliver Te Reo and speech workshops. You will also explore broadcast law, legislation and the broadcasting codes of practice.

Course 2 - Audio Production
During this course you will use a variety of digital editing software including ProTools and Burli, and you will develop practical audio engineering skills specific to the broadcasting industry. On completion of this course you will have developed an original portfolio of self-composed audio work. This includes commercials, voice recordings, a radio drama and other production pieces.

Course 3 - Creative Writing for Radio
Learn how to write a variety of scripts for different purposes and niche markets. Explore the laws and legislation surrounding the broadcasting act, copyright and the advertising standards  authority.

Course 4 - Programming
In this course you will develop a researched radio programme incorporating music programming and clock development. You will explore the role of the Australasian Performing Rights  Association, as well as the history, growth and position of the public, iwi and private radio broadcasting industries in New Zealand.

Course 5 - Radio Sales
Learn how to interpret radio statistical data, and develop a sales proposal, media planner and creative brief. You will liaise with an advertising client and learn about the radio sales process.

Course 6 - Promotions and Marketing
Learn how to plan and execute a station marketing project and complete a post analysis. You will also have the opportunity to plan a client promotion with a local radio network.

Course 7 - Broadcast News
In this course you’ll learn how to collect and collate news, interview, and present news. You will also study ethical standards and broadcasting law

Entry

The minimum requirement for entry is NCEA Level 1 or higher.

Preferred school subjects include combinations of English/Mäori, music, social sciences and computing.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $4,794 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:

  • Certificate in Radio Broadcasting Level 4
