Bachelor of Social Work

Delivered in Partnership with the University of Waikato.

Approved by the New Zealand Social Workers' Registration Board, this course of study will give you the competency, skills and training you need to become a successful social worker.

It focuses on social policy and social issues, family, decision making, social science research and community development, social justice and bicultural and multicultural social work practices.

Courses are taught jointly by staff from the University of Waikato and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Content Details

You enrol on a year-by-year basis and will normally complete each year’s programme before moving ahead to the next year. Students intending to study part-time should discuss their programme of study with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences before enrolling.

Practical Experience

Placement in a work environment is an essential component of the BSW. In the third and fourth year of study students develop practical experience through work placements in a social service agency. Detailed information on papers may be found at www.waikato.ac.nz/social-work/.

Entry

New Zealand University Entrance, or an equivalent qualification.

You will also have to submit a police clearance check form. Applicants will be interviewed by at least two members of a selection panel.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
