Kahikatea - Certificate in Social Service Studies Level 4

This course of study offers a professional start towards your career as a community or youth worker, residential or health worker, or a caregiver.

Social and community workers are passionate about making a difference. They work with individuals and families, whanau, community groups and schools to help them function the best they can.

It includes personal and professional development courses, social service work and social service delivery.

Content Details

Personal and Professional Development
This course outlines a code of ethics for social service. You will explore your own values alongside codes of conduct relevant to social practice and social service organisations.

Social Service Work
You will learn about, and discuss, the values, laws, structures, provider roles and responsibilities in social work.

Social Service Delivery
Assessment of client need and how to establish an appropriate environment will be covered in this course.

Kahikatea - Certificate in Social Service Studies Level 4

Entry

You need to:

  • be at least 17 years of age and have a minimum of four years secondary schooling if enrolling immediately after completing secondary school and have NCEA Level 2 or have gained the Certificate in Tertiary Study Level 2, OR
  • have evidence of successful study at level 3 and have an understanding of what social and community work involves

You may be advised to enrol on the short course Tools for Academic Study before this programme starts.

Police Check
Although a police check is not required for this programme, if you wish to become a social worker it is important to determine your likelihood of meeting the Social Worker Registration Board's ‘fit and proper’ criteria.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $2,610 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
