Want to work as a personal trainer or in a fitness centre, inspiring others to be the best they can be? On your marks... get set... GO! This course provides a heap of further exciting study options and will see you on your way to a fullfilling career in sports and fitness.

Our hands-on programme gives you the knowledge and skills to work in fitness centres, multi-use facilities, sports team and aquatic centre environments. Learn how to write personal exercise programmes, take team fitness training, complete courses in fitness testing and goal setting, fitness facility management, client care and retention, group fitness and nutrition for exercise results, as well as comprehensive first aid.

Content Details

The Polytechnic is proud to have its own fitness and aquatic centre and you’ll be making full use of these fantastic facilities.

We believe in learning by doing, so your own fitness levels and personal health will improve as part of the programme!

Personal Fitness
You’ll learn how to demonstrate the correct use of fitness equipment and be able to describe the effects of exercise on the body. The influence of nutrition in goal setting success is another aspect covered in this module.

Exercise Instruction
We’ll teach you how to measure an individual’s fitness level and develop and facilitate an exercise programme according to your client’s goals. Learn to write programmes for clients - from body tone to strength, cardiovascular benefits to power, and hypertrophy to increased flexibility.

Group Fitness Instruction
Learn how to design and facilitate group fitness training sessions including Aqua-Fit, Circuit and Pump.

Client Care / Public Relations
You’ll be taught how to attend to your customers’ needs and how to improve public relations for a gym or fitness centre. Develop skills associated with the motivational aspects of being a personal or team trainer.

Gym Management
Learn how to develop and provide an organisational and operational base for a fitness centre.

Comprehensive First Aid Certificate
You’ll be taught comprehensive first aid, and gain the certificate.

Please note that this qualification has physical programme content.

English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 500.

Indicative Fees

  • $5,242 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.

Qualifications Gained

On successful completion of the programme you will receive:

  • Certificate in Fitness Level 4
  • Comprehensive First Aid Certificate
  • REPS Accreditation (on application)
