You’ll study a wide range of topics including anatomy, coaching, exercise prescription and sports science, physiology, sport management and marketing, sociology, health and wellness, fitness assessment and personal training.
Once you’ve successfully completed the diploma, you’ll be able to complete just one more year to obtain Auckland University of Technology’s (AUT) Bachelor of Sport and Recreation (BSR), delivered right here in Tauranga.
Content Details
Year One
Applied Anatomy
This course provides an understanding of human body structure. The course promotes an understanding of the integration of anatomy, kinesiology, biophysics, and biomechanics with reference to the musculoskeletal system.
Exercise Prescription
This course provides students with a basic understanding of exercise programming. Knowledge gained by active participation in fitness centre programmes, will result in students being able to prescribe exercise programmes for cardiovascular fitness, strength, muscular endurance, power and weight control within a fitness centre environment.
Outdoor Recreation Leadership
Students will complete a range of sporting and recreational activities through this exciting course, plan lead and manage an outdoor pursuits activity as well as learning about the basic principles of injury management.
Sport And Recreation In Society
Students consider the structure of society in New Zealand and the place of sport and recreation within it. Comparisons will be made with the structure of society overseas. A critical analysis will be made of issues affecting participation of all groups of society in sport and recreation activities through fieldwork and research.
Coaching And Athlete Testing
This course introduce students to the art and science of sport coaching. Students will be able to test and train various components of fitness such as speed, agility, endurance and power.
Managing Sport And Recreation
This paper investigates the role of providers in the sport and recreation community. The course introduces the principles of marketing and management theory in the context of sport and recreation. An analysis of sporting systems of a range of countries is undertaken and the implications of competing in these countries are investigated.
Physiology
This course provides an understanding of human physiology through the study of the body systems. The course focuses on the individual physiological systems and the integration of these systems.
Sport Psychology And Nutrition
Students will be able to apply principles of nutrition to meet a client’s needs for health and physical activity. The course includes sport psychology as well as looking at physical activity in young children and a Māori perspective on health.
Year Two
Compulsory
Exercise Science
This course is designed to provide you with physiological knowledge, skills and understanding that underpin current theories and practice of training for performance. The focus of
this module will be to examine the physiological basis of training by evaluation and application of scientific research to training theory.
Physical Activity & Health
You will apply physiological knowledge to an understanding of how regular physical activity provides health benefits, including the prevention of lifestyle related diseases. The role of
psychology in encouraging people to undertake physical activity and achieve behaviour change is studied. Community activity programmes are evaluated including those relevant to special population groups.
Applied Sports Nutrition
Develop an understanding of the relationship between nutrition and optimal sports performance, and address the dietary requirements for a variety of sports people as well as pertinent sports nutrition issues relating to athletes.
Sport Business Law, Information Technology & Statistics
This course provides the fundamental skills in the application of IT and sport, sport and the law, and research statistics. Generic skills learnt are easily transferable into many disciplines.
Industry Experience & Research
You’ll be given the opportunity to experience directed learning in the workplace. By negotiating your own work placement you’ll gain knowledge of the sport and recreation industry and be able to put into practice your learning with industry employers.
Sport Business Management & Marketing
This course builds on knowledge gained in year one, with further exploration of marketing and strategic planning, organisational behaviour and marketing mix strategies. The case studies, field trips and lectures are all part of the learning mix.

Coaching
This course is designed to provide you with theoretical and practical skills that will aid and improve coaching practice. More specifically, this module aims to elucidate the roles and
responsibilities of a coach and as such ensure that students reflect on their coaching philosophy.
Personal Training
Through applied skills in personal fitness training, emphasis is placed upon prescribing customised exercise programmes and the process of leading clients through exercise sessions in a motivating and professional manner.
Human Movement
This course is designed to provide understanding of the major factors that influence the quality of human movement. You will focus on reinforcing anatomical knowledge and applying biomechanical principles to understand and analyse movement.
Entry
All applicants should provide evidence of involvement within the sport and recreation industry and be able to participate in physical activities.
- A minimum of 80 credits or better at NCEA Level 2 with no less than 12 credits in each of four subjects from the approved list (English, physical education, maths, biology/sciences). You must have achieved merit or excellence with a minimum of 36 credits.
- OR a minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 including 14 credits at Level 3 or above in each of two approved subjects and 14 credits at Level 3 in no more than two domains or two approved subjects (English, physical education, maths, biology/sciences).
Applicants who are 20 years or older and students who have successfully completed one of our Level 4 qualifications are encouraged to apply.
We also welcome applications from students who have not achieved the minimum entry criteria and can prove that they will meet the academic standards required. Further information should be requested from the Sport and Recreation Department.
English Language Requirements
If you are an overseas student or a new resident and English is not your first language, please note that study at tertiary level requires both written and oral participation.
You will be required to have an IELTS score of 6 or TOEFL score of 550.
