Diploma in Tourism (Flight Attending) Level 5

Love people, places and new experiences every day? Prepare for a career in the aviation industry as a flight attendant.

This one year diploma follows on from our certificate programmes. You will learn about airlines, airline safety, operating procedures, health and safety, excellent customer service, and will also study aspects of hospitality. Some courses credit towards the University of Waikato's Bachelor of Tourism.

In addition to the core papers you will also study:

Cabin Crew

  • Embarking and disembarking passengers
  • Use of PA standard and emergency announcements
  • Securing cabin for take-off and landing
  • Passenger manifests
  • Conflict management
  • Managing passengers
  • Special passenger requirements

Safety and Emergency
This course includes water ditching, first aid , survival training, safety procedures, air accidents, fire fighting and medical issues.

Aviation Industry
This course includes aviation terminology, major aircraft components, crew resource management, airport geography, dangerous goods and hazards.

On-board Hospitality
This course includes alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, food hygiene, and food service.

Field Trips
You‘ll spend some time at Sir George Seymour’s Air Crew Training Centre based close to Auckland airport. This will involve practical experience in aircraft simulators relevant to flight attending. You will practice normal and emergency procedures associated with the role of being a flight attendant.

You’ll also participate in a number of day trips to visit local airports and industry representatives.

Entry

To gain the Sir George Seymour Certificate in International Flight Attending you will need to have a current first aid certificate. This can be arranged while you are studying towards the Diploma.

  • You must be 18 year of age or older by the end of the programme to meet airline entry requirements
  • ANDd fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of eight literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Mäori; four credits must be in reading and four credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards
  • OR completion of any level 3 or higher NZQA National Certificate in the tourism or hospitality sub-fields
  • OR completion of any recognised equivalent Level 3 or higher certificate If you are over 20 years of age this requirement may be waived. 

Please note: most airlines have specific entry criteria which will be discussed at the information meeting.

You will be required to have an IELTS score of 6 or TOEFL score of 550.

Indicative Fees

  • $6,138 incl. course related costs

The standard published fee is applicable for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only.

An international fee is payable for non New Zealand citizens/permanent residents.
