Mark Fitzpatrick

Graduate – 2006 Diploma in Marine Studies,
2007 Bachelor of Applied Science,
2008 University of Auckland’s Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science
Employed - Part-time Fisheries Technician at NIWA and Part-time PADI Divemaster

Prior to enrolling in the Diploma of Marine Studies, Mark had travelled overseas and been in various types of employment.

On seeing the diploma advertised at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Mark decided to retrain for a career that he could be passionate about. We asked Mark what the highlights of the programme were.

"Apart from going to Tonga in the second year and swimming with Humpback Whales??!!! That was by far the biggest highlight and it led to a job up there the next year. I got flown up to Tonga to guide the whale-swimming for an entire month!

"The field-work training in general was also a highlight. The practical experience you gain in the course is invaluable in the real-world, and I know this first hand. I can survey in a multitude of environments, including underwater, using a whole host of methods. I also pick up new techniques quickly as I am so practised in the basics.

"I loved the fact that the course provided so many qualifications over and above the actual diploma qualification. The diving element especially has changed my life in many ways. PADI instructors and the Skippers qualifications have already helped me get many different jobs."

After graduating, Mark gained employment with NIWA as a research assistant in the Marine Ecology and Fisheries department.
