Current study – National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4
Employed - Apprentice, Form Building and Developments in Tauranga

Ben decided being ‘stuck in the office’ the rest of his life was not his cup of tea. At the end of year 13, he opted for a ‘hands-on’ vocation.

"I wanted to get out there and build cos that’s what I love. For me there’s a lot of job satisfaction working with materials and being part of a project from start to finish. Watching the process evolve is a real buzz."

Ben sings high praises of the Polytechnic’s carpentry programme.

"I’m definitely glad I did the course. When I got into industry I wasn’t so ‘green’. The tutors taught us the do’s and don’ts for the job. They motivated us and definitely know their stuff.

"It was also great to have all the theory units done and only the practical units left to be completed on-site. I’m half way through my second year and it’s going really well."

"I already knew I wanted to work for Form Building and Developments as they have a good reputation in the industry, particularly in highclass residential work. I kept in contact with one of the owners during my studies and once I graduated I did a three month trial and gained an apprenticeship with them. I was stoked.

Ben also has a lot to say for the National Certificate apprenticeship programme.

"Apprentices from Form Building and Developments go only through the polytechnic. The course is really well structured and the tutors do a lot of follow-up to make sure you are progressing with your practical units. They really motivate you to get through it."
