In 2005, Poonam came from her home country of Nepal to visit her parents who are living in New Zealand. She decided to make the most of the opportunity.
Poonam enrolled into the Diploma in Information and Communications Technology Level 5 at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and has since gone on to study the Bachelor of Computing Systems.
"I am really happy I made that decision. I had never really intended to study IT, but now I’m really enjoying it. It is challenging but the job opportunities are good and it will give me a lot of flexibility to have such a qualification for wherever I end up travelling and living. It is a very good course."
English is not Poonam’s first language but she has overcome the barriers and believes it has a lot to do with the support from her tutors.
"You can always go and talk to them. They listen with open ears and are very supportive. I have found it easy to talk to them about any issues holding me back. The staff at the polytechnic have been really nice and helpful right from the start."
