Sean’s tourism journey started almost twelve years ago when an advertisement for the Diploma in Tourism at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic caught his attention. The former forklift driver and bouncer practically begged to get on the next programme, and he has never looked back.
"It was a long time ago, but the core lessons still ring in my ears. Doing the course has set me up in such a rewarding career. The tutors had extensive industry experience and provided the students with a range of skills and experiences in the various tourism areas.
"The work experience component of the programme was a key factor in me gaining my position at the Tauranga I-Site Visitor Centre. I gained a part-time job with them while I was studying and, upon completion, was offered a fulltime role as a Visitor Consultant."
As Marketing Manager, Sean’s main focus is bringing more people to the region, encouraging them to stay longer and spend more money while they’re here. Tourism Bay of Plenty markets in key areas, such as Australia, North America and Europe but also focuses strongly on domestic tourism which has increased significantly in recent years.
"The most exciting thing has been to see Kiwis willing to travel at home. They are exploring their own country and becoming promoters of it. I am, of course, passionate about the Bay, as are all our staff, and my aim is to see more locals experiencing and promoting their own region. It has so much to offer!"
