Community worker, youth worker, residential worker, caregiver.
Henry Petero hasn’t put his heart and soul into supporting community youth just for his own personal satisfaction. Though he says that can be a big part of it, it’s not the prime motivator.
"To me, doing this kind of work is a moral obligation. It’s not a want to; it’s a have to. There simply isn’t enough support for youth in our society. On top of that, there’s a severe shortage of Polynesian support workers in the social services industry. I don’t see I have a choice, I just have to do it!"
"It’s about being there when those young people reach the turning point in their life, and supporting them through it."
Henry, a New Zealand born Cook Islander, believes his life skills and experience could only but lead him in the direction of gaining a qualification in social services. He took the plunge by enrolling in Kahikatea - Certificate in Social Service Studies Level 4 because he felt it would better prepare him for the Social Work degree and give him a solid foundation to work from.
