Disability Information & Services has equipment available for loan to students with disabilities. If you require any specialised equipment or would like to chat about what is available then please make an appointment with one of the Learning Advisors (Disabilities) in Kahurangi Student Services.
A range of ergonomic equipment is available for students who need to use ergonomic furniture due to impairment. This includes high and low back ergo chairs, kneelers and foot rests.
These are portable transmitter/receiver listening systems with a hearing loop. The tutor uses a microphone and transmitter and the student uses a receiver. The transmitter transmits the tutors’ voice directly to the receiver cutting out any background noise or distractions. They are primarily for hearing impaired students and deaf students who wear hearing aids but are also useful for students with head injuries, ADD/ADHD, and other conditions that result in difficulties with concentration.
These are portable audio tape recorders and digital dictaphones to use for recording your classes.
This equipment captures an image of an entire page and then presents it the way you like to read. It converts hardcopy material into electronic text and displays it on the computer screen. There are user-controlled settings for magnification, colour and contrast and a live mode for handwriting and other manual tasks. Text can be presented as a column layout, as a continuous line or even one word at a time. It has been developed for people who are vision impaired but could also benefit people with learning disabilities.
