New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2)

Are you an overseas immigrant? Do you need to improve your English language skills? This short, practical certificate will help you – and it's free for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents!

The aim of this programme is to provide you with an opportunity to increase your literacy, language and numeracy competence so that you can achieve your goals, and to support entry to the programme of your choice.Programme information for international students

You’ll go on field trips throughout the local area to help boost your confidence so you can fully participate in New Zealand society. It also opens up new employment options and paves the way to further tertiary study.

The programme is available at three levels. You'll participate in orientation and placement tests to identify the most suitable level of study.

Content Details

You’ll take a range of courses focusing on:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving

Numeracy and communication technology are also woven throughout the programme in an everyday context.

The programme includes field trips to enable you to become familiar with our local area and to provide you with the opportunity to practice English in everyday situations outside of the classroom environment.

You will also have the opportunity to spend some time in other programmes of study and vocational activities.

This programme has 4 courses:

  • Pre-intermediate English 1 (ESOL)
  • Pre-intermediate English 2 (ESOL)
  • Pre-intermediate English 3 (ESOL)
  • Pre-intermediate English 4 (ESOL)

Classes are usually held 9.00am-3.00pm, Tuesday to Friday.

Applicants participate in orientation and placement tests to identify the most suitable level of study. This involves assessments of literacy and study skills; self-identification of strengths, weaknesses, and study readiness, as well as an interview with a course advisor.
