The aim of this free, Level 4 course of study is to provide you with an opportunity to increase your literacy, language and numeracy competence so that you can achieve your goals, and to support entry to the qualification of your choice. Programme information for international students

You’ll go on field trips throughout the local area to help boost your confidence so you can fully participate in New Zealand society.

Level 4 graduates usually meet the English requirements needed to enrol in our diploma and degree courses.

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) is made up of:

  • Upper Intermediate English 1 (ESOL)
  • Upper Intermediate English 2 (ESOL)
  • Upper Intermediate English 3 (ESOL)
  • Upper Intermediate English 4 (ESOL)

Content Details

You’ll study a range of topics, focusing on:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving

Numeracy and communication technology are also woven throughout your study in an everyday context.

You'll go on field trips to enable you to become familiar with our local area and to provide you with the opportunity to practice English in everyday situations outside of the classroom.

You'll also have the opportunity to spend some time in other courses of study and vocational activities. In some cases you may be able to complete assessments and earn credits towards certain qualifications.

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) is 17 study weeks, plus holiday breaks.

Classes are usually held 9.00am-3.00pm, Tuesday to Friday.

Applicants participate in orientation and placement tests to identify the most suitable level of study. This involves assessments of literacy and study skills; self-identification of strengths, weaknesses, and study readiness, as well as an interview with a course advisor.
