Growsafe Spray Safety Certification
Get qualified before you spray! This one-day course is a must for anyone who needs to spray chemicals in an agricultural or horticultural setting.
Tutored by accredited NZ Agrichemical Education Trust trainers at our Tauranga campus, this course teaches the safe and responsible use of agrichemicals. With several dates throughout the year you can choose a course to suit you and additional dates can be arranged to meet demand.
The programme is based on unit standards:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act and New Zealand Standards (NZS) 8409:2004 for the use of agrichemicals
- Prepare to apply, and apply agrichemicals using hand-held equipment AND/OR prepare to apply, and apply, agrichemicals using motorised equipment
The course is held on a Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
We can offer additional programmes if there is sufficient demand.

If you also need to pay course related costs, i.e. if outlined in programme costs above, you need to apply separately to StudyLink (up to $1,000/academic year for eligible students). Note course related costs are paid directly into your bank account by StudyLink and you will be required to pay this to Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.
Upon successful completion of the programme you will receive:
- Growsafe® Introductory Certificate
- NZQA Unit Standards 21563, and either 27215 or 27216 or both
Completion of the unit standards, along with evidence of your practical competence, will provide sufficient evidence to allow a test certifier to issue you with a five-year Approved Handler Certificate.
Recertification - it is not compulsory to attend the one day programme to renew your certificate; you can attend a half-day recertification programme. Contact a Growsafe® Trainer/Test Certifier for more information - refer to www.growsafe.co.nz for contact details.
Proof of practical competence with agrichemical use (ie. completion of the ERMA Assessment of Practical Competence Form 3 and copies of your appropriate spray diaries) is needed to complete the requirements for issue of the Growsafe® Introductory Certificate.
