New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 4)

Extend your English language skills and get ready to study the course of your choice. This language course is free for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

The aim of this level 4 course is to help you increase your literacy, language and numeracy ability. It also helps you get into other courses you may want to apply for.

You gain the skills to communicate independently in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency. This course focuses on social and community English language settings.

Level 4 graduates usually meet the English requirements to enrol in our diploma and degree courses. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2.

Our English language courses are available at different levels. You will go through some testing to work out which one is best for you.

This qualification is intended for students of English as an additional language, and who are attending NZQA-approved courses delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand or off-shore.

Entry Criteria

You must have completed either:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3), OR an
  • English Language Proficiency placement test

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

International applicants for whom English is not their first language will be required to show evidence of language competency, issued within the last two years, before being eligible to enrol in any non-English programme. The level of competency required is outlined in Rule 18 and Appendix 2 of the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules 2013. And below under the title English Competency.

English Competency

Level 4 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed NZ Certificate in English Language L3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined in Rule 18 and Appendix 2 of the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules 2013.

For domestic applicants for whom English is not their first language, evidence of language competency may be required.
